Wonder work Pg 11 - 98 Task 1

Image result for wonder
1)What was August's one wish that he wanted? If you could change one thing about your appearance what would it be?
'If I found a magic lamp and I could have one wish, I would wish that I had a normal face that no one ever noticed at all. I would wish that I could walk down the street without people seeing me and then doing that look-away thing.

2)What do you think it means to be ordinary? What makes August extraordinary?

I think to be ordinary means, that your just yourself and you blend in with the others. On the other hand what makes August extraordinary, its that even though he's different to others he's full of wonders that nobody knows about.

3)How do people react when they see Auggie's face for the first time? How would you react?
People's reaction, Stayed away from him, mocked him, secret chats about him, e.g. My reaction, Curious, want to know him more, say hi and ask if he would want to be friends (Honestly I would, no lie's).

4)August's dad said, "So sending him off to middle school like a lamb to the slaughter...." What does this mean? Explain.
It means that they won't always be there for August, now that he's found a school that he can attend to and make new friends, he's going to be a helpless victim around the school and students

5)Would you send August to school if you were his mom or dad? Explain why or why not.
I would, but then I wouldn't, two good and bad reasons why. (Good) August would make more friends and learn more about everything he's heard from being homed school, (Bad) None of them would be friends with August because of what he looks like.

6)What white lie did August's mum tell? Why did she do it? Are white lies ok to tell?
About the IQ test, so then he could get into the school, no because of its a lack of respect for the person.

7)Auggie decided he liked Mrs Garcia ‐ when she wasn’t wearing her shiny smile. What is a 'shiny smile'?
It's a fake smile

8)How does Auggie know the first time he meets Julian that he will be a bully? What are some of the ways that Julian bullies Auggie? How does Auggie respond?
He knows because of the way he act's, talk's and look's. some of the ways that Julian bullied Auggie. Is that when Julian asks about August's face.

The Dropping Pins Experiment

Aim: To Observe conduction along a metal rod.

Equipment: A metal rod, Tripod, Bunsen burner, petroleum jelly, 5-10 drawing pins, a stopwatch.

Method:
1) Set up and light a Bunsen burner.
2) Smear a small amount of petroleum jelly on to the head of each drawing pin.
3) Attach the drawing pins at even intervals along the length of the metal rod.
4) Clamp one end of the metal rod to a tripod.
5) Position the retort stand so the unclamped end of the metal rod is in the Bunsen flame and start the stopwatch.
6)Record the time it takes for each pin drop in the table below.

Observation:
As the heat travelled through the tripods metal leg, the pins started falling off, So the particles that held the pins up melted so then it would fall down.

Pictures will be up soon

Explanation:
It's mostly about the heat travelling up the metal so then whatever's on it would fall down.

The Imploding Can - Contraction

Aim: To observe contraction in gases.

Equipment: Aluminium can, scissor tongs, Bunsen burner, heatproof mat, tripod, gauze mat, an open container of water.

Image result for the imploding can experiment explanationImage result for the imploding can experiment explanation
Method:
1)Set up a Bunsen burner underneath a tripod and gauze mat.

2)Pour approximately 50-60mL of water into your can. It should be no more than one-quarter full.

3)Heat the can of water until steam is seen escaping from the top.

Carefully grip the can with the scissor tongs. Ensure you have a firm hold of the can before lifting it off the gauze mat.

4)Quickly, but very carefully, invert the can as you plunge it into a container of water.

Observation:
As the can was heating up, I observed how the steam came up the time that it took for the steam to come up and what it looked like when it was in the container. So about 1 min later the can started steaming then we put the can in the container, To see the results, It crunched and as it did that we took some pictures and did our results.

Explanation:
We had cold water in the can, then heated it up to make steam, after that the particles inside settled down because of the cold water.

Particle Theory of Matter - Convection

Aim: To observe convection in a liquid

Equipment: 200 mL Beaker, water, tweezers, a crystal of potassium permanganate, a drinking straw, Bunsen burner, heat mat, tripod and gauze mat.

Method:
1)Set up a bunsen burner on a heatproof mat. Put the gauze mat on the tripod but leave it just to one side of the Bunsen burner.

2)Fill a 200 mL beaker with 150 mL cold water.

3)Place the beaker on top of the tripod and gauze and allow it to settle for a few minutes.

4)Carefully insert a drinking straw down one side of the beaker, ensuring the straw is touching the bottom of the beaker. Be careful as you do not want to disturb the water too much.

5)Using tweezers, drop a crystal of potassium permanganate down the inside of the straw. Wait for the crystals to settle on the bottom of the beaker.

6)Very gently, so to not disturb the water, remove the straw.

7)Light the Bunsen and slide it under the tripod so that you are only heating the outside of the beaker where the crystal is. Observe.

Observations:
What I saw about this experiment is that the smell of it was unknown, the look of it was dark purple and a bit of light purple. The purple in the water rose to the top and started spreading around the beaker.
